There’s a reason you don’t see much Death Metal around this website. I don’t know if I’m just getting old, getting bored or there just too much now, but Death Metal doesn’t interest me like it used to. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy it from time to time but I think my musical tastes have shifted.
So when a band like Rumpelstiltskin Grinder comes along with an album like “Ghostmaker”, it catches my ears. These guys are a solid mix of Death and Thrash Metal. Their latest album, “Ghostmaker” is my first experience with Rumpelstiltskin Grinder so I can’t speak about other albums, but “Ghostmaker” is definitely a “Carcass worship” album done right.
On “Ghostmaker” you can actually hear the various styles of metal that have influenced these guys. There are elements of Thrash, Death Metal, and some old school Heavy Metal. The point being it’s not your usual 30-40 minutes of just growling over blast beats and ear deafening guitar leads. Though they have some of that too.
The title track “Ghostmaker” has Carcass-esque growls meshed with some pummeling drum beats and killer guitar hooks. The track also has foot stomping rhythm intertwined with some scorching guitar leads. Whereas tracks like “Cold Haunting Death” start off with more traditional metal sounding guitar riffs and then quickly shifting into some angry, chugging Metal.
“Nightworms” is one of my favorite tracks. It is a full-on “Carcass worship” track and that is a great thing. “Nightworms” speeds along with killer leads, some smart hooks and drumming that will crush your skull. There are some nice breaks where the music slows some only to thrust you right back into it. It will have you twitching to the beat.
“Ghostmaker” is a great album by Rumpelstiltskin Grinder. If you are a fan of the faster, more Thrash like Death Metal and dig bands like Carcass, Ghoul or The Kandidate, definitely check out “Ghostmaker”.
